On October 23, 2024, the Elsa Peter Hall in Lahore became a sanctuary of hope and healing as we gathered for the event titled “Learning and Looking Forward for Trauma Healing on Christians in Pakistan.” Organized by the Christian Trauma Care and Research Center (CTCRC) in collaboration with the Psychology Department of FCCU, this event brought together a diverse group of 50 participants, including counselors, survivors, faculty, students, and international attendees from Korea and China.
A Purposeful Gathering
The primary aim of the event was to create a safe space for individuals to share their experiences with trauma, identify the challenges faced by Christians in addressing trauma, and explore the types of support available within the community. The session began with a reading from Galatians 5:1, setting a tone of freedom and hope. Participants engaged in one-on-one introductions and shared their personal stories, highlighting the profound impact of trauma on their faith and lives.
Key Insights and Discussions
Throughout the event, participants expressed common themes of trauma, including religious discrimination, identity crises, financial deprivation, and social isolation. Many shared feelings of dehumanization and worthlessness due to ongoing discrimination, emphasizing the urgent need for awareness and support within the church community.
One of the most significant discussions revolved around the role of the church in trauma healing. Participants emphasized the importance of the church as a platform for awareness, support, and emotional guidance. Suggestions included fostering unity, organizing awareness programs, and providing safe spaces for individuals to seek help without fear of judgment.
Addressing Barriers to Support
The event also shed light on the barriers that prevent individuals from accessing support. Cultural stigma, fear of judgment, and a lack of trust were identified as significant challenges. Participants recognized the need for the church to break these barriers by promoting open conversations about trauma and mental health, thereby creating an environment where individuals feel safe to seek help.
A Call to Action
As the event concluded, participants were encouraged to support one another with affirmations of hope and freedom in Christ. The reflections shared during the event highlighted the growing awareness of trauma care within the Pakistani church and the potential for collaborative efforts to address these issues.
In the spirit of ongoing support, a WhatsApp group was created for participants to maintain communication and continue discussions on trauma healing. This initiative aims to foster a sense of community and mutual support as we work together to identify appropriate partners and resources for trauma care in Pakistan.
Conclusion: A Journey Forward
The “Learning and Looking Forward for Trauma Healing” event was not just a gathering; it was a powerful reminder of the strength found in community and shared experiences. As we move forward, let us continue to uplift one another, break the silence surrounding trauma, and embrace the healing that comes from faith, support, and understanding.
Together, we can create a brighter future for those affected by trauma in our community. Let’s keep the conversation going and spread messages of hope and healing! 💖✨
